Washdown rating matters in operations where the equipment is cleaned with water at the end of shift. Standard equipment isn't sealed for water exposure and degrades quickly under washdown conditions. For operations where the packaging area isn't directly contacting food (palletising, wrapping, dispatch), standard equipment is usually fine. The food-grade specification matters most for any equipment in the wet processing zone or where contamination risk is real.

Cold Chain and Temperature Sensitivity

Cold chain operations need equipment that runs reliably at low temperatures and consumables that perform across the temperature range from production to dispatch. Standard equipment specified for room temperature operation can fail in cold storage; standard tape and film often can't perform.

For carton sealers operating in cold storage, hot melt tape becomes brittle and fails. Acrylic tape performs better at low temperatures but needs more application pressure to bond properly. Water-activated tape doesn't work in cold storage at all because the moisture freezes.

For pallet wrapping in cold storage, standard stretch film loses elongation at low temperatures and can crack during pre-stretch. Cold-grade film is engineered for low-temperature performance and maintains stretch characteristics down to about minus 20 degrees Celsius. The cost premium is small; the performance difference is significant.

The other cold chain consideration is condensation. Equipment that moves between cold storage and ambient warehouse spaces accumulates condensation, which causes corrosion and electrical issues over time. Cold storage equipment should be sealed against moisture ingress and use materials that don't corrode under condensation cycling.

Throughput and Shelf-Life Pressure

Food and beverage production runs against the clock. Product made today needs to be packaged today and out the door for distribution. Bottlenecks in packaging affect product freshness, customer delivery, and ultimately product write-offs. The throughput requirements are often higher than equivalent general operations.

For high-throughput food operations, fully automatic pallet wrapping machines and inline carton sealers are usually justified at lower volumes than for general freight. The cost of a missed dispatch in food (write-offs, delivery failures, retailer fines) is significantly higher than the equivalent in general goods.

Traceability and Labelling
