Stretch Film Storage: Best Practices
Stretch film is sensitive to its storage conditions in ways most warehouses don't fully appreciate. The roll that performs at spec when fresh out of the box can underperform significantly after a few months in the wrong conditions. The performance loss shows up as breakage, inconsistent stretch, and higher consumption per pallet, all of which look like operational issues rather than storage problems.
Good film storage isn't expensive or complicated. It mostly requires understanding which conditions degrade the film and arranging the warehouse to avoid them. The investment is essentially free; the savings show up in consistent film performance throughout the storage life.
This article covers the four storage variables that matter most (temperature, UV exposure, handling, and rotation), what each one does to the film, and the practical steps to protect film performance. The aim is to make sure the film you're paying premium for at point of purchase is still performing at premium when it goes on the wrapper.
Temperature: The Biggest Variable
Stretch film is most stable at temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Below 5 degrees, the film becomes brittle and breaks more easily under pre-stretch. Above 35 degrees, the film softens, loses memory, and stretches inconsistently. Both extremes degrade performance, though the heat side affects film more permanently.
Australian warehouses regularly experience the heat extreme. Roof spaces in summer can hit 50 degrees Celsius for days at a time. Film stored on top racks or near roller doors that get afternoon sun can sit at temperatures well above the safe range for weeks. The film looks fine when it comes out of the storage location, but the stretch performance has been damaged.
The fix is to store film away from heat sources. Lower racks rather than upper racks. Interior locations rather than near roller doors. Climate-controlled spaces if your warehouse has them. For high-volume operations using significant film inventory, a dedicated film storage area away from heat extremes pays for itself in consistent film performance.
For cold storage operations using stretch film, the cold side matters too. Film stored at warehouse temperature and then moved to a cold environment for application has time to adjust if the move happens at the start of the shift. Film stored permanently in cold conditions performs poorly. The right answer is usually to store at room temperature and move to the cold zone only when needed.
UV Exposure: The Slow Killer
Ultraviolet light degrades the polymer chains in stretch film over time. Film stored in direct sunlight (or even bright fluorescent light) for weeks shows progressive performance loss. The film looks similar visually but the molecular structure has been damaged.
The fix is to store film in original packaging and away from direct light. The cardboard packaging that the rolls come in provides UV protection; don't unbox rolls until they're going on the wrapper. For pallet stretch wrap stored on open racks, position the racks away from skylights and roller doors that admit direct sunlight.
Long-term storage (more than 6 months) compounds UV damage even at low light levels. For operations that buy film in bulk and hold significant stock, prioritise storage in interior locations away from any natural light. The film performs identically to fresh stock if properly stored.
Handling and Damage Prevention
Stretch film rolls are surprisingly fragile to handling damage. A roll dropped on its end deforms the core and causes feed problems on the wrapper. A roll stored under heavy weight develops flat spots that affect tension consistency. A roll punctured by a forklift tine loses the protective outer layers and becomes contaminated with dust.
The fix is appropriate handling and storage equipment. Pallet racks designed for film rolls (with appropriate spacing and orientation) prevent the most common handling damage. Designated film storage areas with controlled forklift access prevent puncture damage. Operator training on roll handling (lift from the ends, never from the middle, never drop) handles the rest.
For operations that move film rolls between warehouses or between zones, transit damage is a separate concern. Wrap individual rolls in protective packaging for transit, and don't stack heavy items on top of film rolls during transport. The cost of protective wrap is small; the cost of damaged film that performs inconsistently is significant.
Rotation: First In, First Out
Stretch film has a shelf life. Premium film typically holds full performance for 12 to 18 months from manufacture; budget film for 6 to 12 months. Beyond the shelf life, the film progressively loses stretch performance and breakage rate increases. Operations that hold significant film inventory without rotation can be using film that's well past its useful life.
The fix is FIFO (first in, first out) rotation. New stock goes to the back of the storage area; existing stock moves forward to be used first. The discipline is straightforward but requires ongoing attention; without it, new stock often gets stored on top of old, and old stock sits unused at the back for months.
Date all film rolls when received. Most reputable machine wrap suppliers mark rolls with manufacture date, which makes FIFO straightforward. For unmarked stock, add a date sticker on receipt. Inspect storage monthly and bring older stock forward.
For very high-volume operations, the right answer is just-in-time delivery rather than buffer storage. Smaller, more frequent deliveries keep film fresh and reduce the storage footprint, and most film suppliers will accommodate weekly or fortnightly delivery for committed orders.
Practical Storage Setup
The ideal storage setup has these features: interior location away from roller doors and skylights, ambient temperature 15 to 25 degrees, dedicated racking sized for film rolls, controlled access (limit who handles the rolls), and visible date marking with FIFO discipline. None of this is expensive; it's mostly organisational.
For warehouses retrofitting better film storage, the typical investment is a dedicated rack section ($1,500 to $5,000 depending on capacity) and the operational change to FIFO rotation. The improvement in film performance and consumption per pallet usually pays back within 3 to 6 months on moderate-volume operations.
The other practical consideration is keeping film cores together for recycling. Most film cores are recyclable cardboard or plastic, and consolidating the empties into a single recycling stream (rather than discarding them piecemeal) is a small but real waste reduction.
What Bad Storage Looks Like
If you're seeing any of these symptoms in your operation, storage is likely contributing: increased breakage rate over time on the same wrapper and operator, higher consumption per pallet for film that previously performed well, or visible flat spots, deformations, or core damage on rolls coming off the rack.
The fix is usually low-cost: relocate the film storage, improve the rotation discipline, retrain operators on handling. Once these are in place, film performance returns to spec within the first few rolls used from the improved storage.
